The Southern Nature Park was established in 1995 and it included Protected area of sable grounds in the basin of the Asacha River.
The Park area is situated in the south-eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula. Its area is 479,418 ha. The Park has four active and four extinct volcanoes, many hot springs, and one of the Kamchatka most powerful hydrothermal systems - Mutnovskaya. The coast is highly variable in character, with an abundance of picturesque bays.
The mountain forest character of the landscape Park is typical of Eastern Kamchatka. The plains and low mountains are covered with small-leafed forests and elfin wood, and in volcanic sites, considerable areas are taken up by mountain tundras. The plant comunities in volcanic deposit demonstrate different variants of successions. The flora comprises 590 species of vascular plants.
The wildlife represents species characteristic of Kamchatka (60 species) and birds (170 species). Common are the sable, river otter and the brown bear. In marine cliffy terraces a considerable population of bighorn sheep has been retained. On the boundary with the Olenii Dol Zakaznik dwell wild reindeer, the reminder of the previously big southern Kamchatka population.
The Park has unique nature sites, including the caldera of the Ksudach volcano, Khodutkinskie thermal springs, fjords of the south-eastern coasts.
